I said good-bye to this fearsome beast:
And took the bus to DC to catch my flight, catching Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (a little too chatty) and Willie Nelson (awesome) at Wolftrap, Fogo de Chao for as much meat as we could eat, and Inception (which I only vaguely understood, though the flowchart helped) with Anthony, as well as lunch with Jess at her brother's new grocery store/sandwich shop in Foggy Bottom, FoBoGro.
Headed out for Nairobi, via Rome and Addis Ababa. Saw Cameroon's national soccer team in the AA airport. Caught my flight from Addis to Nairobi and saw this beneath me somewhere over southern Ethiopia:
Arrived at Khweza Guest House in Nairobi exactly 24 hours after leaving Anthony's apartment in D.C. Not bad. Settled in on the amazing roof deck to read for a while, then talked for a long time with the brother and sister proprietors of the hotel, natives of Nairobi who started the hotel last year. And finally some traditional beef stew and chapati, all looking out across the Nairobi skyline.
Decided that the smell of Africa alone is worth the trip: an intoxicating mix of heat and dust and diesel fumes and fried food, which combines for something so....African (and much more pleasant and distinctive than it sounds...).
A little frangipani tree (my favorite) doesn't hurt either:
Off to Somaliland at 8 am tomorrow morning!
